Strategy
Beyond the Board Room: Ensuring Strategy Resonates at Every Level

As CEOs, we spend hours crafting the perfect strategy. We debate, we analyze, and we refine. But here’s a hard truth I’ve learned over years of working with leaders across industries: even the most brilliant strategy is worthless if it doesn’t resonate with every single person in your organization and then can influence their actions.

Too often, I see companies where the strategy is crystal clear in the boardroom but becomes a fuzzy concept by the time it reaches the front lines. The result? Misaligned efforts, wasted resources, and missed opportunities.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. With the right approach, you can ensure your strategy cascades through every level of your organization, inspiring and guiding everyone from the C-suite to the newest hire.

The Strategy Communication Gap

Before we dive into solutions, let’s break down why strategy often fails to resonate throughout an organization:

1. It’s too abstract

High-level strategic concepts don’t always translate easily to day-to-day work.

2. It’s not personal

Employees struggle to see how the strategy relates to their individual roles.

3. It’s communicated once and forgotten

A single town hall meeting isn’t enough to embed strategy into daily operations.

4. It’s not measurable

Without clear metrics, it’s hard for employees to know if they’re contributing to the strategy.

5. It’s not adaptable

Rigid strategic plans can quickly become outdated in fast-changing environments.

Making Strategy Resonate: Key Principles

So, how do we ensure strategy resonates at every level? Here are some key principles I’ve seen work wonders:

1. Translate Strategy into Clear, Measurable Goals

This is where OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) shine. By breaking down your high-level strategy into specific, measurable objectives and key results, you create a clear roadmap that everyone can follow.

2. Cascade Goals Throughout the Organization

Once you have your strategy and company-level OKRs, work with teams to create aligned OKRs at every level. This creates a clear line of sight from individual work to overall company strategy.

3. Communicate Continuously and In Multiple Ways

Don’t rely on a single annual strategy presentation. Use a variety of channels – town halls, team meetings, internal newsletters, even physical posters – to consistently reinforce the strategy and its implications.

4. Make it Personal

Help each employee understand how their role contributes to the broader strategy. OKR software can be invaluable here, allowing individuals to see how their goals ladder up to team and company objectives.

5. Encourage Bottom-Up Input

Strategy shouldn’t be a one-way street. Create channels for employees at all levels to provide input and feedback on the strategy. This not only improves the strategy but also increases buy-in.

6. Review and Adapt Regularly

Use regular OKR check-ins to review progress, identify roadblocks, and adapt as needed. This keeps the strategy alive, relevant and adaptive.

A Case Study in Strategy Resonance

Let me share a success story from a company that transformed how its strategy resonated throughout the organization.

We worked with a large retail chain that was struggling to implement a new customer-centric strategy. Despite clear direction from the top, they weren’t seeing the changes in customer experience they were hoping for.

We implemented a comprehensive approach:

1. Strategy Narrative and OKRs

We translated the high-level strategy into a story, KPIs, and OKRs with a clear narrative.

2. Aligned Cross-Functional OKRs

We worked with cross-functional teams and departments to create aligned OKRs that supported the overall strategy.

3. Multi-Channel Communication Plan

We implemented a multi-channel communication plan, including regular strategy updates in team meetings, an internal video, and strategy-focused Slack channels.

4. Manager Strategy Training

We trained managers on how to connect their team’s daily work to the broader strategy.

5. Strategy Suggestion Box

We created a “strategy suggestion box” where employees could submit ideas aligned with the new customer-centric focus.

The results were impressive:

  • In a survey six months later, 82% of employees could articulate how their work contributed to the company strategy.
  • The company saw a 20% increase in sales, which they attributed largely to better strategic alignment across the organization. The CEO told me, “For the first time, I feel like we’re all truly rowing in the same direction. Our strategy isn’t just a document – it’s alive in everything we do.”
Your Next Steps

Ready to ensure your strategy resonates at every level of your organization? Here are three steps you can take right now:

1. Strategy Communication Assessment

Assess your current strategy communication. How well do employees at all levels understand and connect with the strategy?

2. OKR System Alignment

Implement or refine your OKR system to create a clear cascade of strategic goals throughout the organization. Consider bringing in OKR consultants to help you set up a system that truly connects strategy to execution.

3. Multi-Channel Strategy Communication

Develop a multi-channel strategy communication plan. How can you consistently reinforce the strategy in ways that resonate with different teams and individuals?

Remember, strategy isn’t just for the boardroom. It’s a living, breathing thing that should guide and inspire every person in your organization. With the right approach, you can turn your strategic vision into a powerful force that aligns and motivates your entire team.
