This conversation, playing out in C-suites worldwide, captures the defining business question of our time: In the age of AI, should companies optimize for efficiency through human replacement or effectiveness through human augmentation?
The answer, as both CEOs are discovering, is far more complex than any earnings call or strategic framework suggests.
From the corner office, the AI decision looks like a classic prisoner’s dilemma. Move too slowly on automation, and competitors who slash costs will underprice you into irrelevance. Move too fast, and you might destroy the very capabilities that make your company special.
