V2MOM
V2MOM (Marc Benioff, Salesforce, 1999: Vision, Values, Methods, Obstacles, Measures) is the goal document as a complete narrative, written first on the back of an envelope before Salesforce had customers and rewritten annually ever since by every level of the company, each person’s visible to all.
Benioff has called it the biggest secret of Salesforce's execution, and much of it reads today like convergent evolution with the best of OKR practice.
Three design decisions that age beautifully
First, Obstacles as a first-class field: V2MOM is the only mainstream framework that makes naming what stands in your way a mandatory part of writing the goal itself, a decision the research later vindicated, and one our Issues and Obstacles Log proudly descends from. Second, the goal as narrative: a V2MOM is a readable argument from purpose to measurement, the same conviction behind Key Result narratives and NCT; three systems arriving at the same conclusion independently is evidence, not coincidence. Third, whole-company transparency: everyone can read everyone's, which achieves socially what aligned, not cascaded achieves structurally. Different mechanisms, same destination: shared context beats supervised compliance.
The natural hybrid
V2MOM and OKRs combine unusually well, because each is strongest where the other is lightest. V2MOM's gift is the document: vision, values and obstacles held together in one narrative frame. The OKR system's gift is the rhythm: quarterly cadence, weekly check-ins, confidence assessment, graded retrospectives. A company that writes V2MOM-shaped context and runs OKR-shaped mechanics underneath it gets the photograph and the film. In practice that is close to what we already build: Vision and Values live in the strategy layer with Strategic Pillars, Methods become initiatives, process commitments and experiments, Obstacles go into the log where check-ins keep them alive and escalation drains them, and Measures become Key Results with confidence attached. The hybrid needs no permission; the fields map one-to-one. The full shelf is mapped at Goal Setting.
One line to keep: V2MOM wrote the goal as a story; OKRs give the story a heartbeat.

Can we combine V2MOM with OKRs? +
Unusually well: V2MOM’s gift is the document, OKRs’ gift is the rhythm. Vision and Values live in the strategy layer, Methods become initiatives, Obstacles feed the log, Measures become Key Results with confidence attached. The fields map one-to-one.
What did V2MOM get right that OKRs usually miss? +
Obstacles as a mandatory field of the goal itself, a decision the psychology research later vindicated. Our obstacle log descends from it directly, with escalation and cross-team reading added.
The photograph and the film: V2MOM-shaped context with OKR-shaped mechanics underneath. We build the hybrid, and train your teams to run it.
