A model of how value is created
A data model, in this sense, is not a warehouse schema. It is a causal map: which activities move which metrics, which metrics drive which outcomes, and where the leverage really sits. Built properly it has strategic and health streams, leading and lagging indicators, and clear ownership of every number.
Crucially, it is built before the goals, not after. When the model comes first, objectives target the points of leverage, and key results are the indicators the model says are predictive. When it comes after, metrics get chosen to decorate goals that were set on instinct.
KPI trees that earn their keep
- Start from the outcomes that define success and decompose to the drivers teams can actually influence.
- Distinguish metrics you monitor (health) from metrics you are actively trying to change (strategic).
- Attach targets, context and owners, so a number is never just a number.
- Review the model as evidence arrives: it is a set of beliefs, and beliefs should update.
Teams using ZOKRI’s AI Business OS wire this model in directly, so goal-setting, check-ins and reporting all reason from the same picture of the business.
From dashboard to decision model
Most companies have data everywhere and a model nowhere: hundreds of metrics, no agreed map of how the levers connect to the results. The fix is structural. Sort the three levels, raw measurements feeding calculated metrics, of which a chosen few are KPIs, the taxonomy in KPIs, metrics and measurements, then arrange them so causation is visible: which inputs drive which outputs, which signals lead and which lag.
The methodology connection
The two distinctions that make a data model usable for goal-setting are covered in leading and lagging indicators, when a metric responds, and input versus output metrics, whether you can pull it directly. Together they answer the planning question that matters: which numbers can a team actually move this quarter, and which merely record what happened? A Key Result chosen without that map is usually either controllable but meaningless or meaningful but immovable.
