Building Compound Advantages

The execution playbook: how a compound advantage actually gets built, phase by phase, once you know which loop you are feeding.

Knowing the theory is the cheap part. The research's execution finding is that compound advantages are built in phases, each with its own failure mode, and that the phases cannot be skipped, because each one produces the raw material of the next.

The four phases

Find the loop. Through compound moment discovery: review mining, advocacy analysis, the search for what customers rave about. The failure mode is choosing the loop you wish you had rather than the one your customers already run. Draw and instrument it. Junction by junction, into a metric tree, so the loop's velocity is measurable and its weakest link visible. If it cannot be drawn, return to phase one. Feed it deliberately. Concentrated quarters, OKRs aimed at the weakest junction, resources allocated to strengthening rather than harvesting, the discipline that the fourth universal test checks. Protect and extend it. As the loop matures, apply the Can't-Won't Test to its junctions, and extend only where the same engine feeds the expansion, the diversification discipline that separates amplification from write-down.

The honest timescale

Loops compound slowly before they compound visibly, which is why the political test is often harder than the strategic one: the early quarters show effort flowing into a flywheel that has barely moved, while transactional opportunities go unharvested next door. The organisations that succeeded held the path through the flat part, usually because leadership could draw the loop and recite why each junction was being fed, strategic narrative doing its quiet work.
