The signal your reporting filters out
Formal reporting is a compression algorithm optimised to reassure. By the time reality reaches the leadership team it has been rounded, contextualised and greened. The correction is deliberate listening: structured ways of hearing from the people closest to customers and the work, before their concerns become quarter-defining surprises.
Landing and listening in practice
- Land messages so they are understood, not just sent: one idea, repeated, with the "what changes for me" made explicit.
- Listen through skip-levels, open forums and asynchronous channels where dissent is cheap.
- Understand by playing back what you heard and checking it, so people feel heard rather than surveyed.
- Close the loop visibly: show what changed because of what was said.
Paired with external perspective gathering, this is how leadership builds an accurate picture of reality, which every strategy and OKR cycle depends on.
