The Rise of OKR Project Teams or Squads

There’s a growing rise in the number of cross-functional project teams or squads that are being created to target specific metrics or tasks. This is not that surprising given the depth and variety of knowledge and experience that exists between different teams. In fact, you could argue, why has it taken so long to become mainstream best practice?

The Rise of OKR Project Teams or Squads

There’s a growing rise in the number of cross-functional project teams or squads that are being created to target specific metrics or tasks. This is not that surprising given the depth and variety of knowledge and experience that exists between different teams. In fact, you could argue, why has it taken so long to become mainstream best practice?

Take Churn for example

Take critical metrics like Churn as an example. This metric is traditionally owned by Customer Success. However the people that influence Churn are spread across different functions. For example:

Product Marketing

Product Marketing are responsible for defining the Ideal Customer Profile (ICP), crafting your Value Proposition and supporting communications that persuade and influence an audience to engage, evaluate and buy a product.

Better alignment between the Customer Success and Product Marketing can lead to a better definition of the ICP and targeting. This means the leads entering the funnels are leads less likely to Churn.

Sales

Having a pipeline of non ideal prospects is a Churn nightmare waiting to happen. Giving Sales teams clarity on what an ideal customer looks like, and creating Initiatives to create a process for the sign-off and transition from prospect to customer can help hugely. Especially on larger deals.

Sales managers can also help by creating a system for commission clawbacks on customers that Churn.

Product / Engineering

An obvious key driver of churn is usage. Having Initiatives that focus on improving usage are critical. These could be in areas like UI / UX, features, and education. They could also be through the implementation of Initiatives that help CS teams, like Automated Red Flagging of clients that might churn because of a usage pattern. For example, you know customers that are engaged long-term use features X, Y and Z. Therefore flagging customers that aren’t using these and perhaps are not logging in at a desired frequency makes sense.

Introducing the Churn Squad

You can see from the above example that having Customer Success, Product Marketing, Product and Engineering in a Churn Project Team or Squad makes total sense. The OKR they’d target could be:

Customers LOVE our Product
Increase Trial to Customer Conversion Rate to 30%
Reduce Net Monthly Churn to 1%
Increase Average Revenue Per User to $2K
Increase Expansion Sales to $500K

How could you use Project Teams or Squads?

OKR Project Teams or OKR Squads can be used to target business critical metrics like Churn, or they can be used for initiatives like building a new website. The goal and success dynamic remains the same regardless.
